Arse Elektronika 2008 Call for Papers and Sponsors

It's that time again! Monochrom is working on the beginnings of Arse Elektronika 2008, so it's time to dust off all of those "ACM conferences would NEVER publish this!" work you've got!
Also, they're looking for sponsors for this year's conference. It's a great way to get your companies name out there!
The Call for Papers is included below.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Call for Papers
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ARSE ELEKTRONIKA 2008
Do Androids Sleep with Electric Sheep?
Critical Perspectives on Sexuality and Pornography in Science and Social Fiction
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Taking up where the successful conference in autumn 2007 left off, this year's Arse Elektronika stands under the motto "future" -- and the ways in which the present sees itself reflected in it. Maintaining a broadened perspective on technical development and technology while also putting special emphasis on its social implementation, this year's conference focuses on Science and Social Fiction.
The genre of the "fantastic" is especially well suited to the investigation of the touchy area of sexuality and pornography: actual and assumed developments are frequently depicted positively and approvingly, but just as often with dystopian admonishment. Here the classic, and continuingly valid, themes of modernism represent a clear link between the two aspects: questions of science, research and technologization are of interest, as is the complex surrounding urbanism, artificiality and control (or the loss of control). Depictions of the future, irregardless of the form they take, always address the present as well. Imaginations of the fantastic and the nightmarish give rise to a thematic overlapping of the exotic, the alienating and, of course, the pornographic/sexual as well.
In order to intelligently contextualize the abundance of queries that are involved here, this year's conference will be structured around three day-long discussion panels, each devoted to a specific theme. The impossibility of fitting many of these issues and relationships into such neat categorizations is not only accepted, but also encouraged.
Panel 1: Narration
Narrative positions and narrative media are closely linked in the treatment of the sexual and the pornographic. In the area of fantasization and its great variety of media differentiations (film, literature, computer games, etc.) this fundamental phenomenon is also expanded through the facet of a highly influential fan fiction. Submissions for this panel should deal e.g. with specific aspects of individual media, media complexes, distribution or reception.
Panel 2: Technology
Sexuality and pornography are manifestations of a social reality and are directly linked to questions of technological innovation, whereby fantasizing can also function as a motor of innovation. Submissions for this panel should deal e.g. with the present and future of technological developments, with social-technological aspects (e.g. space travel, plastic surgery, etc.) or with conditions of technologically driven development.
Panel 3: Politics
Science (and social) fiction, sexuality and pornography are often infused with colonialization strategies, conceptions of social norms and political strategies. Here the utopian, the dystopian and the xenophobic are mixed into a dangerous and interpretationally potent concoction. Submissions to this panel should deal with e.g. the juridification of the body, biopolitical standardization processes, political systems of domination and taboos surrounding interracial sex.
Submission requirements:
The 1-2 page submission, written in English, should be thematically oriented toward one of the three discussion panels. It should contain clear information regarding the methodology and up-to-dateness of the thesis it puts forth and detail the technical equipment required for the lecture's delivery. Submissions should be mailed to arse2008@monochrom.at no later than 2 May 2008. Organizational considerations make it impossible to take into account submissions received after this date.
Each participant's written lecture notes should reach the organizers no later than 15 September 2008, the version for publication in the proceedings of the symposium by 15 November 2008.

British Engineering Systems' Intelligent Vibrator Project
British Engineering Systems' Intelligent Vibrator Project
Man, BES's website name sounds so much more official than Slashdong. Ah well, we were goin' for comedy in the first place (for those of you who didn't notice the gigantic flying circuit board dildo in the header and all).
Remember the torturedildonics project that I mentioned someone else coming up with and mentioning a few months ago? For those of you that don't like clicking links, the idea is basically to make a random number generator that controls a vibrator, therefore making a very annoying sex toy. Yes, some people want this. No, I don't care if you don't. Maybe some other people reading this page do. Might be nice to think of them every once in a while, eh?
Anyways, the BES blog is all about the journey to discovery and learning that goes along with trying to put this particular project together. Lots of interesting discussion about implementation, ideas for the future, etc... Hasn't been updated in a couple of months, but I'm partially posting this to poke the project's author to start posting about it again. Here, have some hits, random internet guy!

Torturedildonics: Why fuck when you can be fucking annoying?
Torturedildonics: Why fuck when you can be fucking annoying?
A lot of the talks I give these days reference a rather mythical pattern based program that does wave interpolation to combine people's input methods for teledildonics. Not one line of code has been written for this yet because I'm a lazy fuck and still rather burnt out on sex toys.
However, from the people that brought you some great DIY toy plans for remote toys and Onyx, the computer based love board game comes this LJ post may have revitalized a bit of my interest.

You see, while I've been interested in "what functions can be used and integrated to produce this most pleasure", this idea behind the project in this post is "What pattern would be the absolutely most fucking annoying thing ever, getting you maybe sort of close sometimes but otherwise just keeping you from thinking straight for any period of time" (similar to what is shown in the picture above). While the former "nice" idea is fun and neat but kinda boring and most likely not to be picked up by the mainstream, if one could get a generalized vibrator/electrostim version of the Annoy-A-Tron going, I'm sure parts of the BDSM community would be all over it, especially if you could store down the generator for offline use (which is pretty easy these days).
Combine with biometrics (as some sort of scalar based on pulse, for example), and you have a box I'd be happy to put little horns and some flames on.

X Rated Patents
Yup, I love me some patents. Just wish I had the wherewithal to stop all this open source shit and actually get me a few, then ride out the rest of my creative years bleeding poor dildo start-ups dry. However, I'm a lazy bastard, so it's just easier to throw it all out there for free and let someone else make the money. I'm fine with fame.
So, to prove those someone elses actually exist, there's x-ratedpatents.com. This site tracks all the newest and latest in hoohahs and weewees and things that will now cost you a licensing fee to do with them. There's some neat, some odd, and some both. Needless to say, it's great for giving me ideas of things to build. Now I just need to execute on some of those... Someday.
Not to mention, this site fulfills my "line/explode diagram with many tiny callouts" fetish.

Battery Boys Session in Mountain View, CA - February 4th, 2007
Battery Boys Session in Mountain View, CA - February 4th, 2007
It's that time again!

The Battery Boys (made up of Uncle Abdul and Tom, who have more years of experience in electrostim than I have in like, life in general) are holding another build session for their new YUM-1 toy! No prior building or electrostim experience needed! The session is on February 4th in Mountain View, CA, from 2pm-5pm in the afternoon. Registration is only $50, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a premade stim unit (though the theatre alone is worth the price).
I went to one of these session back in October which I still need to write up. It was an absolutely awesome experience, and I highly recommend going. You'll laugh, you'll learn, you'll build things to shock yourself in the nuts with. All the good things in life wrapped into one afternoon.

The Center for Orgasmic Studies
The Center for Orgasmic Studies
The Center for Orgasmic Studies is a center, presumably for studies of orgasmicnisity. From their commercial, it's obvious that they've made taken at least one couple from the depths of unorgasmicness to spinning in circles. By American cultural standards, spinning in circles denotes a happy and successful relationship. The Center's revolutionary Sex Machine Therapy has turned many unhappy sexual relationships into wild, crazy, monkey sex fuckathons (to use the medical term).
However, recently they seem to have come upon some drama, and if there's anything I love, it's drama. Someone absconded (I used a big word!) with videos of the institute's practices. The culprits have been caught, but the damage that was done is irreparable:
"Everyone, probably everyone in this building, is not happy with what has happened," he added during a break from preparing for his work to be presneted later this month in Montreal at CHI2006 at the Sexual Interactions Workshop. "But when you're high-profile, or on someone's radar ... then it matters. I am sorry for the patients and family who have become instant porn stars, and I have to live with the guilt and go on." Holding back tears Mr. Stein addes, "On a positive note it spreads the word of our ground breaking treatment modalities using many of our high tech sexual instruments. Hopefully we can help other people by bringing an new awareness to our work here at the clinic.
Just to let Slashdong readers know I did my part, I bought Mr. Stein some ice cream while at CHI2006. It made him feel a little better.

ET-312 Control Through Perl Scripts
ET-312 Control Through Perl Scripts (Registration Required)
Remember that whole kurfuffle about me recommending the ErosTek 312 unit for the Wired Christmas Gift Guide? Well, for all of you that did go ahead and buy it, you can now add the joy of perl hacking to your new toy! Some enterprising engineers over on the SmartStim Boards have found a way to control the ET-312 unit through Perl, meaning we shall soon be seeing all sorts of wonderful things causing happy nerve stimulation (I personally will be looking forward to my toast being done a LOT more, now).
The software is GPL, meaning no warrenty and no liability, so, for the love of GOD, please be safe. No crispy cocks for us, thank you very much.
Please note, the boards do require registration, but it's very much worth it, as they are an amazing resource for electrostim info.

Mac S&M
Mac S&M (Flickr Slideshow, Flash Required, No-Flash Needed Set Here)
I know a lot of people love their Macs. They love their Macs a lot.
However, some people *l*o*v*e* their Macs, and know how to fulfill the needs of the machine. Luckily, these people also post pictures of it to Flickr. Warning: Those not into slot close-ups and laptop lock S&M might find this set hard to handle.
This photo set is either awesome in a horribly strange way, or strange in a horribly awesome way. Or both.

The Sex Machine Book
Ever wonder what Slashdong project photos would look like if they were taken by someone with actual talent, versus a nerd with a digital camera? Well, I can only hope they'd come out looking like something near the quality of The Sex Machine Book (Link goes to their blog). This new photography and interview book showcases the machines of some of the best sex builders out there. The photography is absolutely stunning, and the interviews reveal the interesting people behind the somewhat scary toys.
Maybe someday we'll actually finish a project worthy of being photographed. Too bad that "finish a project" part is so damn difficult.

Totems: The Next Level of InfoPorn
Totems: The Next Level of InfoPorn
I am information's bitch.
Seriously. Take some information, make it pretty, and I will sit there and drool like a raver on acid, happily staring at it for hours. Information Aesthetics is one of my favorite blogs thanks to this (WHY MUST YOU GO ON VACATION?!?! DON'T LEAVE ME!!!). It's not often that I get to combine InfoPorn with REAL porn though, so this post makes me extra happy.
Totems is an art project that creates sex toys from porn viewing density mapped against time over the course of a day. Data about websites visited by users were mapped based on Porn versus Non-porn viewing. The resulting graphs were spun around an axis and printed using a 3D printer, in order to make (not-so-comfortable, but hell, some people apparently like that sort of thing) sex toys.
Sex generated Sex Toys. I gotta go change pants. Again.

Rectaltronics: MILSpec Butt Plugs
Rectaltronics: MILSpec Butt Plugs
Filled with enough puns to make even the most seasoned Xanth reader woozy, Rectaltronics offers all the parts you could possibly need to set up a butt plug so devastasting it could start the next World War. From the "Pooper Power" power supplies to the "Dr. Mengele" oscillators and VAX compatible "DynaVibe" control software working over the RS-232 based ButtStream(tm) bi-directional data standard, this has to be the most specialized butt plug site I've ever seen. Mass usage has even caused some sysadmins to have to reconfigure their firewalls.

The Better Built Bondage Book
AND WE'RE BACK! Moving is done, and I'm never, ever doing that again. At least, not until our lease is up here. Stupid leases.
Anyways, we've got a ton of stuff to cover, so expect a ton of posts in the next few days. First up is the Better Build Bondage Book. This is a guidebook on how to build all sorts of bondage equipment, from cuffs to vacuum beds to R/C vibrators! The book runs around $40US, but looks to be very high quality, with explanations of the theory behind building the equipment as well as full instructions for everything. Just imagine walking through Home Depot with this as your shopping list.

Mod Rez Trancevibe to work with any vibrator
Mod Rez Trancevibe to work with any vibrator
Remember the Rez TranceVibrator? 'course ya do! It's the peripheral that launched a thousand hard-ons.
Thanks to our forum members, we've now found a site that hosts a tutorial on how to modify your TranceVibrator to work with any vibrator you own!
That being said, be warned (as they don't warn you on the tutorial page): this mod has around the same safety level as the SeXBox v1 mod. If you pull more than 500mA through this (or possibly 100mA, not sure how PS/2's USB setup works), it's going to hopefully just shut down, but might also cause other undefined behavior. So test whatever vibrator you hook up to this first, to make sure you arn't gonna screw anything up.
Or just wait for our "Make your own TranceVibrator" tutorial, which will be happening sometime in the near to far future.

Intimate Transactions: The Transmute Collective
Intimate Transactions: The Transmute Collective
Intimate Transactions is a art project that links 2 users in seperate locations together through a multimedia experience that is controlled by physical stimulus. Placement of the hands, pressure of the back, and gestures can all change the appearance of images on the screen and audio coming through the surround sound speaker system.
No sex involved in this, but still a very interesting immersive enviroment project.

Radio Controlled Sexings Continue!
BDSM Workshop - 6 Channel Radio Controlled Vibrator
Two new links in one day! Wackiness insues!Coming from one of the biggest DIY Sex Toy sites I'm aware of, BDSM Workshop, is a six channel toy controller hacked together from parts taken from a walkman, radio controlled car, and other things you don't usually put near your privates unless you're into something really, really different.

More DIY Sex Toy Fun
SymToys - DIY Radio Controlled Toys
For quite a while, I've been thinking "Oh, come on, someone *had* to have done the DIY electronic sex toy thing already, and I'm just not finding it." Sure enough, I was right! SymToys is a sex toy company that has built sex games and interactive toys for what looks like years (Hell, they have software listings that require OS 8.6, which means they're either old school, or just really, really hardcore old mac fanatics). Their page includes instructions on building a light-up spreader bar, and two different kinds of RF controlled vibrators. Time for a naughty radio shack run!(via Slashdong Forum and Fleshbot)

RCX Sex and Robotic Reproduction
Damn, I wish all my post titles could alliterate like that. So, after all of our posts about how technology helps human reproduction, it's time for a post about how technology helps technological reproduction.
The inventive geniuses over at HackADay have built a robotic reproduction system using the Lego RCX brick. The robots use a basic bump-movement algorithm for navigation, and when their IR sensors line up, they exchange "genomes" and reproduce with a 1% mutation rate. Neat. Assuming you could throw this on some boards with more powerful processors, this could get really interesting.
Also in the news this week, a researcher in the UK is working on a self replicating 3d printer. It's a printer that prints... itself! Grey goo ahoy! =D

I <3 geeks
So I'm obviously a big geek. I've modded sex toys to video game controllers, I have a website with a gigantic floating circuit board dildo as the header, yeah, it doesn't get much worse than this. That's why I got so incredibly fucking proud when I saw someone say this line on one of the forum threads about the SeXBox:
"Dude, you realize this is the first step to everyone's Holodeck fantasies, right?"
Yup. In the future, when, because you CAN, you're having sex just with whatever wacky thing your imagination comes up, hopefully people will think back and remember the meager beginnings, when all we had was a dildo, a video game, and too much time on our hands.
Also, the narcissism of my rampant referer watching has pulled up some really interesting pages in the last few days. I have to say one of my favorites has been SexyFandom. It's so nice to know I'm not the only person joining geek and sex into an unholy pairing of .
Look at that! Sex and UFOs! That fuckin' rocks! =D
